you know what really gets me?
people spend so much money on skincare. like, SO much. i'm talking hundreds of dollars. maybe thousands over a year. and for what? half the time their skin looks worse than before.
i should know. i was one of those people.
red patches here. dry flakes there. breakouts everywhere. it was like my face was throwing a tantrum. and honestly? i couldn't blame it. i was putting like seventeen different things on it every day.
at some point i just stopped. looked at myself in the mirror and thought — what am i even doing?
so i threw everything out. started from zero. and here's what i figured out along the way.
cleansing is simple. why do we make it complicated?
you wash your face. that's it. but somehow people get it wrong.
think about what's on your face at the end of the day. oil. sweat. dust. pollution. makeup if you wear it. your face is basically a sponge for all the gross stuff floating around.
so yeah, wash it off. but gently.
and please don't scrub like you're trying to remove paint. just be gentle.
okay moisturizer. this one's important.
i used to skip it. my face was oily so i figured moisturizer would make it worse. made sense to me at the time.
but here's what actually happens.
when your skin is dry, it panics. it thinks "oh no we're losing moisture" and starts producing extra oil to protect itself. so my face got even oilier. all because i wasn't moisturizing.
makes no sense but that's how it works.
serums. honestly?
they're great. i'm not gonna pretend they're not. they're concentrated and they work fast and they can really help with specific issues.
but you don't need three of them. or four. or five.
pick ONE. just one. whatever your biggest concern is.
dull skin? vitamin c. dry skin? hyaluronic acid. breakouts? niacinamide or salicylic acid.
that's it.
the mistake people make is throwing everything at their face at once. then their skin freaks out and they have no idea which product caused it.
been there. regretted it.
try one thing. wait a few weeks. see what happens. if it works, great. if not, stop and try something else.
boring? yeah. but it works.
sunscreen. i know. you're sick of hearing about it.
but seriously.
every single morning. rain or shine. cloudy or clear. winter or summer.
uv rays don't care about the weather. they reach your skin anyway. and over time they cause dark spots and wrinkles and uneven texture — basically everything you're trying to avoid.
find one you actually like. something lightweight. something that doesn't leave a white cast. something you don't hate putting on.
and if you're outside for a while? reapply. annoying? yes. worth it? also yes.
nighttime. keep it simple.
at night you just need to do two things. clean off everything from the day. and give your skin some moisture while you sleep.
that's it.
i used to do this whole big routine. oil cleanser. water cleanser. toner. serum. eye cream. night cream. sleeping mask. took forever. most nights i was too tired to even start.
now? wash my face. put on some moisturizer. maybe a serum if i remember. done in five minutes.
my skin looks exactly the same as when i was doing the whole production.
funny how that works.
a five minute routine is one you'll actually do every night. a forty five minute routine? you'll skip it. especially when you're exhausted.
social media is dangerous. seriously.
every time i open instagram or tiktok there's a new trend. some new ingredient. some new gadget. some influencer swearing it changed their life.
don't fall for it.
what works for them probably won't work for you. everyone's skin is different. different genes. different hormones. different stress levels. different everything.
pay attention to your own face. how does it actually feel? dry in winter? oily in summer? change things up. you don't have to use the same stuff all year.
little things add up too.
change your pillowcase. clean your makeup brushes. drink water. sleep enough. manage stress.
none of this is exciting. but honestly it makes more of a difference than half the serums out there.
and please don't expect overnight miracles. i've done that too. tried something new and checked the mirror every hour. disappointed every time.
give it time. weeks. not days.
so here's the thing.
you don't need expensive stuff. you don't need fifteen products.
keep it basic. cleanser. moisturizer. sunscreen.
add extras only when you have a real reason to.
be consistent. be realistic. and don't make skincare harder than it is.
it's just skin. take care of it. but don't stress about it.
